Will Warp drive technology be here sooner than you think? A top lead scientist (Dr Harold White) at NASA suggested that perhaps we could have a star trek experience in our lifetimes. This certainly seems like a bold statement to make considering how we are still stuck in low earth orbit.

Other Solar Systems
There was a time that it was only in science fiction like star trek that other planets existed around other stars, while there was speculation there was no evidence. However, that changed around the early to mid-1990s when a large Jupiter-like gas giant was detected in a different star system.
Today it is a completely different story with not just orbital bodies but possible earth-like exoplanets being discovered by Kepler.
This means that our solar system is far from being unique in terms of planetary bodies orbiting around the sun, which I think the scientific community once thought. So scientists are saying now is the time to understand how to develop the technology to explore not only our solar system but also beyond.
The Holy Grail of Space Flight
Researchers are actively looking at different propulsion technologies as an alternative to fossil fuels. Trying to get off the ground and into earth’s orbit, takes around 90% of the payload of the mass of the rocket in fuel.
As an example, to get to Mars would require a phenomenal amount of chemical rocket fuel, and taking into account the mass of the fuel as well as getting to Mars land safely, then breaking out of Mars orbit, and then finally getting back home again. Hardly a walk in the park…
The cost of this is ridiculous and we have not even looked at the technologies needed to keep the crew safe and alive. So space flight is notoriously difficult and other kinds of propulsion technologies need to be looked at perhaps even for Mars.
If you want to go beyond the solar system, then you are going to have to come up with an entirely different source of energy and how to travel. Fossil fuels and chemical rockets will have to be abandoned completely.
Travelling at 20% of the speed of light would perhaps take us 30 to 50 years to get to Alpha Centauri which is the closest star to us being 4.2 light years away.
This is why warp drive is really the holy grail of interstellar space flight otherwise we are not going anywhere outside our solar system.
Can we not go Faster than Light?
Nothing with mass can go faster than the speed of light, however, space itself is understood to be able to travel at any speed since it does not have mass. In relation to Einstein’s field equations, space-time can be stretched and compressed at will.
So researchers wonder if there is a ‘loophole’ in getting around the light barrier via warping or distorting space around us so the destination is coming to us rather than we going to it. While we exist inside a mass-less cloud or warp bubble. Thus the craft is never going faster than light but instead space-time itself is.
At NASA they are looking how to create and detect a very small distortion using Laser Quantum Optics in the lab and if this can be done and understood then it can be argued that they have proved that such a phenomenon is possible perhaps leading to the next steps.
The motivation behind these experiments at NASA is related to Dr White and his team who research advanced concepts, and feel the energy requirements can be greatly reduced, as before the energy needed was completely impractical.
Perhaps a star-trek type experience may be here sooner than we think…
